This morning, I’ve been thinking.
That, in turn, has taken me to thinking about thinking. Thinking about thinking doesn’t have anything to do with what I was thinking about, but it did make me chuckle.
Are you following this?
In a group of teachers, when one says, “thinking about thinking,” most folks automatically bring the word “metacognition” to the forefront of their, well, thinking. We’re teachers. It’s what we do.
Me, though, in addition to thinking about metacognition, I think about the Disney cartoon/movie Beauty and the Beast. Have you seen it? Lately? You’ve possibly got time on your hands–check it out again, it’s a good one.
Anyway, there’s this scene where the shallow, overbearing, narcissistic antagonist Gaston is in a singing conversation with his sidekick LeFou:
(Gaston sung)
LeFou, I’m afraid I’ve been thinking
[LeFou]
A dangerous pastime—
[Gaston]
I know…
Really, it’s a classic line, and it’s worth checking out.
Like I said, though, it doesn’t have anything to do with what I was thinking about.
I’ve been thinking about what I–and most of my readers–are doing right now.

We’re taking our words, our ideas, our celebrations, and our fears, and we’re sharing them with the world. (Here, of course, we call them slices.)
That’s pretty cool, and that’s really, really new. The last 15 years of my life have been shared, but the first 40 or so weren’t.
I’ve been thinking about how, through blogs, yes, but more commonly through social media, so much positivity is being spread around the world.
Unfortunately, negativity is too, but that’s the side of the coin I don’t want to dwell on right now.
To the writers participating here in this writing project, I say, “Thank you!”

Yet There is Method 
I love the way you wrote this slice! It was fun and thoughtful (thinkful?) I think (there you have it) that we SOL participants have benefitted soooo much from going through all of this…together. What timing, right, when you (think!) about it. Right smack in the middle of a month we all look forward to because of the new experiences and exposures we get SLAMMED with EVERYTHING NEW. I don’t think, I know, that this has enriched each of us and broadened the experience in a way, that I think, will positively affect our futures as educators and…thinkers! Thank you for this post.

The connection to the lyrics of the song was a very effective way for me to stay focused on your topic. I also appreciate having this audience of teacher/slicer/writers. I agree we need to keep the positive sharing toward the front of our thinking.

I think I spend too much time thinking about thinking. 🙂 I’m glad you are participating too! It’s such a great challenge and every year at the end I start to feel sad about it ending.

I firmly believe that, yes, it is possible to spend too much time thinking about thinking! This is a great challenge, and every year I miss it when it’s over. Not enough to keep writing, but this might be the year!

Thinking about thinking was something I liked to do when I was younger–a way to throw my brain into a dog chasing its tail merry-go-round. It felt a bit like seeing if you could do a back bend. Testing your mind and body to see what they might be capable of performing. Thanks for sharing.
